Drivers, if you’ll be on I-95 in the Fredericksburg area tonight, Nov. 30, prepare for delays.
Starting at 10 p.m., I-95 will be reduced to one lane in both directions near Exit 133, Route 17, and Exit 136, Centreport Parkway, in Stafford County.
Then, between midnight and 3 a.m., Dec. 1, and Friday, Dec. 2, crews will impose full stops. All I-95 traffic will be brought to a standstill for up to 30 minutes at a time.
VDOT said the full traffic stops are necessary to maneuver large construction equipment within the work zone for the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension Project.
Currently, the 10-mile extension of the Express Lanes is under construction just south of Exit 143, Route 610, to Exit 133 in Stafford. When the extended Express Lanes open to traffic in late 2023, travelers will be able to access the express lanes at Exit 148, Quantico, Exit 140, Courthouse Road, and Exit 133.
Hood Drive closure
Next week, on Wednesday, Dec. 7, VDOT will close Rt. 636, Hood Drive, in Spotsylvania to through traffic between Route 1 and Route 208, Courthouse Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
However, residents and businesses located on Hood Drive, McGowan Drive, and Wilcox Street will have access during the road closure.
This closure is needed to allow for the removal of several large trees. It’s work that needs to be done during daylight hours due to safety concerns. That work is to prepare for construction in the spring on an intersection improvement project at Hood Drive and Courthouse Road.
The rain date for this work is Dec. 14 during the same hours.
