Drivers who are planning to use Rt. 17 in Stafford on Thursday and Friday night should be prepared for delays.
VDOT announced that starting at 7 p.m. on November 3 one lane on Rt. 17 between Short Street and Sanford Drive will close. And all traffic on Rt. 17 will be stopped intermittently between midnight and 3 a.m. Each stop may last up to 30 minutes.
The schedule, weather permitting, through Nov. 4 is as follows:
- 7 p.m. – 11:59 p.m. – Single lane closure
- Midnight to 3 a.m. – Full traffic stop up to 30 minutes
- 3 – 6 a.m. – Single lane closure
- 6 a.m. – All lanes open
These traffic disruptions are needed to allow crews to install equipment for a temporary traffic signal as part of the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.
That project is one of several that VDOT has underway to unlock the gridlock on I-95 in the Fredericksburg area. In particular, the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project seeks to reduce northbound I-95 congestion between the Exit 130/Rt. 3 interchange in Fredericksburg and the Exit 133/Rt. 17 interchange in Stafford County.
Work on the project began in 2020, but drivers still have quite a bit of time to face potential traffic impacts associated with it because completion isn’t expected until the summer of 2024, according to VDOT.
