A 57-year-old man in Stafford County attempted a getaway from a movie and hit a snag—literally.
William Pandolfi of New Hampshire was driving a 2018 Hyundai Sonata that ran off the road, through a field and got lodged in an embankment, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The man, who was alone in the car, attempted to get away by jumping on the back of a passing trash truck. The driver of the truck stopped and Pandolfi jumped off.
Sergeant A.I. Assur, who was dispatched to respond to the accident, saw Pandolfi walking down the road after he got off the truck and ordered him to stop, but he didn’t comply. Instead, he ran into a wooded area beside the road, the police report stated.
An off-duty Arlington police officer witnessed this scene and stopped to help Assur. A foot chase ensued but it ended because Pandolfi got entangled in the thorns of a briar plant. At that point, he surrendered without incident.
With regards to Pandolfi’s attempt to get away on the trash truck, the report said Pandolfi revealed he had seen a similar escape in a movie.
The report stated he had glassy eyes and slurred speech. He was charged with DUI, hit and run and a traffic lane violation. As of September 29, Pandolfi was being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond.
