Drivers who want to avoid major delays should find an alternative route to using Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area this week.

VDOT announced that starting July 25, I-95 northbound and southbound will be reduced to one lane overnight near various interchanges between exit 148 (Quantico) and exit 104 (Carmel Church) in Caroline County. These changes to the traffic patterns are to allow for Express Lanes construction and paving operations.

In addition to the reduced number of lanes, between midnight and 3 a.m., crews will stop all I-95 northbound or southbound traffic up to 30 minutes at a time to safely lift and install the outside bridge beams. VDOT said Virginia State Police will clear the congestion from one traffic stoppage before the next full traffic stop.

At exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg, overnight lane closures are needed to allow crews to conduct routine safety inspections of the Route 3 overpasses.

The aforementioned lane closures and traffic stops are scheduled to run at night through July 29.

New I-95 Southbound Off-Ramp at Exit 133 Opens Aug. 2

On August 2, drivers on I-95 southbound seeking Route 17 northbound towards Warrenton or Route 17 southbound towards Falmouth will have access via a new, permanent ramp located approximately ½ mile before the decision point between local and through lanes. The new ramp is just north of the Truslow Road overpass.

Therefore, drivers with destinations to Route 17 will need to stay right on I-95 southbound after exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).

The permanent traffic pattern will divide local traffic between Route 17 and Route 3 at an earlier point to reduce merging and weaving approaching the exit 133 interchange.
