I wanted to do a post that follows up on a previous post that I did this past summer discussing how food and travel bloggers can be more aware of diversity, inclusion in equity. And I wanted to put in the work for our Black-owned restaurants in Washington, DC.
As a person who identifies as a part of the Black Indigenous persons of color community (BIPOC), as I am Navajo born and raised in Arizona, I wanted to be as supportive as I can to Black-owned professionals in the hospitality industry.

Black-Owned Restaurants in Washington, DC
In the Adams Morgan neighborhood, there is Bokum Cafe, in City Vista or the Mount Vernon neighborhood is a widely celebrated restaurant called Mélange, there is Georgia Brown’s in McPherson Square, an awesome Mexican restaurant called Agua 301 in the Navy Yard, there is one of the only Black-owned restaurants in a hotel and that is the Delegate in the Courtyard by Marriott and Residence Inn near the Convention Center, and a new favorite is the Motown Square Pizza, which is Detroit Style Pizza.
In the Shaw neighborhood, there is DCity Smokehouse, Service Bar, and Halfsmoke.
There is an awesome tea shop near Howard University and another location in the Northeast neighborhood called Calabash Tea and Tonic, as well as Mr. Braxton. One of my favorite chicken restaurants is the Roaming Rooster with locations on U Street, Bladensburg Rd, and now in the Taneytown neighborhood.
On H Street there are many selections, but a good standard is Cane, Kitsuen Ramen bar, in the latest is Kitchen Cray by Chef Robinson.
There is also Carolina Kitchen on Rhode Island Ave Northeast. There are three other locations in the Washington, DC area.
Black-Owned Shops in the DMV
Sauce Foods is a Black, women-owned meal delivery and catering company. The Gift Shop in D.C.’s Union Market market is owned, operated, and curated by the Creative Theory Agency. There is the Sweet Lobby cupcakery on Barracks Row.
I am mentioning a shortlist, but by no means is a not a complete list of restaurants in Washington DC but a list that will grow and thrive.
