Mount McLoughlin, in southern Oregon, is a spectacular volcano. Towering over 4,000 feet above the ground below, it's the 6th tallest mountain in Oregon. In this video, I hike the arduous climb to its summit and offer the wonders the peak provides. Such an incredible place!

My love for the Oregon wilds and the American west generally is a bittersweet thing: there is an immensely troubled history of our acquisition of our public lands that often came at the great suffering of the native peoples whose lands were lost. In this video, I explore an area that was used to march native peoples who attempted to escape their reservations, and now holds a shrine commemorating one of those victims otherwise lost to history. A beautiful place with a tragic past.

The Columbia Gorge is a spectacular wonder of nature, with mountains lifted upward by tectonic forces and carved into shear vertical shapes by the floodwaters of Lake Missoula as their 1,000 foot deep waters cascaded through the gorge at 65 miles an hour. And in the gorge, you have astonishing waterfalls flowing down the cliffs crafted by the floods' powers.

The Columbia Gorge is one of the most spectacular places in Oregon, and world renowned for its immense scenic beauty. Lesser known, however, is how much of that spectacular beauty is the result of repeated dramatic floods created by the collapse of an ice dam blocking a lake half the size of Lake Michigan in western Montana 15,000-13,000 years ago. The Wallula Gap, in southeastern Washington, was one of the restrictions faced by the flood waters of Lake Missoula as it rampaged towards the Pacific Ocean, flowing at an astonishing 10,000,000 cubic meters a second. Destroying columns of rock and soils, it owes much of its modern dramatic form to the Lake Missoula Megafloods' power. 


The EPIC Floods that Discharged 4,000 Olympic Swimming Pools Every SECOND!

The Horse Heaven Hills, by Richland Washington, are a remarkable stop in the Lake Missoula story, showing the vast differences between the landscapes that felt the wrath of the floods and those that did not. As they churned their way to the Wallula Gap, where their might and power are on full display, vast amounts of muddy debris plugged the course of the Yakima River, and left the graveyard of its previous valley in their wake.


Ice Age WONDERS: Chasing Lake Missoula in the Horse Heaven Hills, Washington

The spectacular Hanford Reach National Monument, in southeastern Washington, is a small part of the massive Lake Lewis, a massive lake that was formed and drained in less than a week as the Lake Missoula floods devoured the Wallula Gap and Columbia Gorge. One of several spectacular lakes formed by the floods!

Dry Falls is a spectacular remnant of the Lake Missoula floods, gouged out in eastern Washington. When the floods moved through, 10x the flow of all of the world's rivers combined fell off a precipice 3.5 miles wide: 5 times wider than Niagara Falls. They are truly a monument to epic nature.


This Was the Largest Waterfall EVER (That we know of).

The Grand Coulee is a spectacular canyon that was formed by the Lake Missoula Megafloods, colliding into Glacial Lake Columbia, and flowing out into a vast canyon that includes Dry Falls, the largest waterfall known at 3.5 miles wide and many hundreds of feet tall (look forward to them in the next video!). An astonishing place to wander in wonder.

In few places are the sheer violence of the Lake Missoula Flood's titanic power more apparent than in the scablands of eastern Washington. Wherever the floods went, the landscape was sundered, leaving numerous lakes and torn chunks of earth in its wake. All of the soil in its path was stripped from eastern Washington, and brought to the valley south of Portland.
