Travel FAQ: United Club Access at Airports

Voyager Guru

Whenever we hit the friendly skies, we also swing by an airport lounge for a quick cocktail or a bite to eat. While the United Club lounges may not be the best in the world, they can be incredibly convenient! Many travelers ask us if you have to be flying business class to be able to access them and the short answer is no! There are a few ways to access United clubs that you should be aware of before your next trip:

Premium Cabin

Of course, the easiest way to access a club is by flying in a premium cabin, specifically business class on premium transcontinental routes or internationally. Note that you cannot access lounges on short-haul "first" class routes. First class on a domestic United flight is more like a "premium economy" and they will not let you in. However, if you're flying in Business class between SFO and EWR, for example, you'll have access.

Star Alliance Gold Members

If you have Star Alliance Gold status, you can access a United lounge if you are flying a Star Alliance airline on an international ticket. Check out any eligible Star Alliance members, here. Star Alliance gold members can bring 1 guest into the lounge with them.

United Club Membership / One Time Passes

United offers a few different credit cards that come with varying lounge accesses. The MileagePlus Explorer card comes with 2 lounge accesses per year that you can use to enter a United lounge when flying on United or a member airline.

Travelers with a United Club membership via the premium credit card or via purchase can access lounges as well.

Travelers can see all the open lounges on the United website, here.
