Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture is Calling Artists for an Exciting Project

Phoenix, AZ - The City of Phoenix calls for Arizonan artists for an exceptional project to showcase their creativity, and artists with little to no public art experience are welcomed to apply.

The program opened by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, partly supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, is for aspiring artists to design 2D perforated steel shade screens for multiple City of Phoenix bus shelters.

In the attempt to adorn the cityscape, providing proper shade for transit users, and reducing the urban heat impact in the city, the project would be a three-strike-with-one-stone. As the city is undergoing the effort to make Phoenix even more HeatReady, the artist-designed shade screen is expected to define the community’s distinct identities and expand the Public Art Program’s award-winning series of artist-designed shade structures.

The application will not be requiring applicants to pay any fees, and all artists with 2D design expertise are welcomed to apply, regardless of their background and/or identity. Applicants who wish to apply must apply in their own names and not through a third-party involvement. A group of professional artists forming a team can also have a chance, although there still has to be one appointed team leader for admission and communication matters.

Applicants are only required to submit simple submission materials such as:

  • A 1000-character-limit Statement of Intent (much like a cover letter)
  • CV (collected CVs for a team)
  • An Image List describing the intended project
  • Previously created artworks in JPG format.

The call for applicants started on July 1st 2021, and will close on August 26th 2021, 10.59 p.m. Artists with late submission time will have their applications disqualified.
