According to data from the Florida Department of Health, the state's Covid-19 response took a hit last week as the number of Covid-related child deaths in Florida more than doubled in just over a month.

The child mortality rate in Florida from COVID-19 rose to 140% from the end of July to early September due to the Delta variant.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Florida chapter says most of these deaths were aligned with underlying health conditions.

However, they still noted that the surge has led to experts in a state of worry and uncertainties about how the Delta variant may unravel in the coming months.

During an intense US Senate hearing in July, Director of CDC Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, said the data surrounding child deaths in the U.S. was overwhelming.

Looking at the data, it is hard to ignore how high the number of infections has been among minors. But the scarier part is the number of child deaths.

Child deaths in Florida doubled in just a month

A Florida Department of Health weekly report showed seven children under the age of 16 died from coronavirus complications from the start of the pandemic to July 30 - a 15-month period.

The weekly report from the Florida Health Ministry showed that only seven children succumbed to coronavirus complications during the 15-month period.

This data looked at deaths Covid-19 kids under the age of 16 who died between March 2020 and July 20, 2021.

Deaths involving coronavirus diseases (COVID-19), pneumonia, and influenza that were reported by NCHS by time period, the jurisdiction of occurrence, sex and age group looks like this:

However, the number has since jumped to 17 as per the department's latest report conducted from July 30 until September 3.

As of September 8, the CDC reported a national total of 486 deaths in children ages 0-18.

The death of 15-year-old Victoria Ramirez also raised questions about Covid-19 safety in any Florida schools.

Although suspected, it is impossible to tell whether Victoria Ramirez contracted the virus at Booker T. Washington High School where she attended.

The infection rates in Florida are higher than any state in the U.S.

Florida has registered a higher number of Covid-19 cases in children than any state in the United States due to the highly infectious Delta variant.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has reported over 243,000 kids in the U.S. testing positive with COVID-19 in the past week.

This is the second-highest week of Covid-infection for child cases since the start of the pandemic back in March 2020.

Child cases have increased exponentially after declining in early summer, with nearly 500,000 cases in the past two weeks.

This is a recent, brief overview of COVID-19 infections in children:

  • In the week ending September 9, a total of 243,373 child COVID-19 cases were reported.
  • At the beginning of July, roughly 72,000 weekly cases were reported among children.

The increase in Covid-19 cases among children across Florida can be attributed to the return of kids to school.

During the month of August, few days after schools had opened, thousands of pupils across the state were forced to quarantine following a spike in positive covid cases.

Several schools in the state have had to shut down to allow principals, teachers and staff to take steps to help manage and prevent the spread of the delta variant.

The majority of the schools have since moved to classes online in an effort to mitigate the damage that is being caused by the novel coronavirus.
