If you use TurboTax to file your taxes in recent years, you may be getting a refund in the mail.
Do you recall using TurboTax to file your taxes because you thought it was free to file? Unfortunately, when you try to file the returns it wanted you to pay TurboTax a certain amount to file your returns. If you did, you are one of the 140,000 North Carolinians that will be getting a refund
Attorney General Josh Stein, along with 50 other attorneys general, won a more than $4 million settlement from Intuit Inc., the parent company for TurboTax. Turbo Tax is accused of deceiving North Carolinians into paying for tax services that should have been free.
The total amount the company will pay is $141 million in restitution to millions of consumers across the nation.
Who Qualifies to receive a settlement check?
Intuit is providing restitution to nearly 4.4 million people in all 50 states who used TurboTax's Free Edition between tax years 2016 and 2018.
These people were told they had to pay to file, even though they qualified for the IRS Free File program, a partnership between the agency and major tax prep software companies. Eligible TurboTax users will receive notification, either in an email or letter. lol
Do I need to file a claim for the TurboTax Settlement?
If you qualify, you will automatically receive a direct payment of approximately $30 for each year that you were deceived into paying for filing services.
When will I receive the settlement check?
Because this settlement involves multiple states across the United States, payments will be distributed through a third-party administrator. An exact date when the checks will be sent out hasn't been determined yet.
