I’ve been on the hunt for another fried chicken sandwich place in Oakland besides World Famous Hotboys and discovered Hawking Bird. Located in North Oakland in the Temescal neighborhood, Hawking Bird is located at the corner between 49th and 51st Street on Telegraph. This area is filled with restaurants and shops so there are plenty of things to explore when you are visiting. Known for their Asian fusion food, they specialize especially in Khao mun gai which is a classic Thai chicken and rice dish, and their fried chicken sandwich. I stopped by to grab both items along with a side of garlic noodles to pair with it. Wow, all the items here were flavorful and the umami level is out of the world. The majority of the items start at $11 and up but that is a pretty good deal for how delicious the food is. You can dine indoors or outdoors or head over to their website to order directly for pickup and to-go orders. There is no parking lot on site but you can find street parking or residential parking around the corner.

The must-try dish here has to be their delicious fried chicken sandwich. If you are looking for a crispy and juicy chicken sandwich, you must try this entree. Filled with cabbage slaw, mint, cilantro, mayo, and more, each item made the sandwich so tender and flavorful. One sandwich is more than enough to fill you up since the fried chicken is massive. This is my number one dish here.

You should also try their classic Khao mun gai dish which is poached chicken over rice. It is served with cucumber slices and cilantro along with a delicious soybean and ginger sauce on the side. I love pouring the sauce over the rice so there is a bit on every bite. The dish also comes with a cup of chicken broth which is very flavorful and rich. I usually finish the chicken and rice first then finish it off with the broth and find it filling and I am usually stuffed afterward.

Overall, visit Hawking Bird if you are looking for Asian fusion food. This place definitely knows what they’re doing and each item is delicious. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for Khao mun gai or fried chicken sandwiches in Oakland.
