The space inside the Lakawanna Station, located at 1 Lakawanna Plaza is finally getting a makeover. Previously known as Pig + Prince, this location has been left vacant since the business closed back in the summer of 2019.
Lauren Hirschberg is the chef and owner of Turtle + the Wolf, a popular Montclair restaurant specializing in elevated bistro fare inside an industrial chic setting. The restaurant opened just 6 years ago and quickly became a success. Her plans to open a BBQ beer garden have finally come to fruition. Titled Pineapple Express Barbecue, the restaurant is set to officially open this month. Keep reading to find out what you can expect from this new space.
Lauren will be joined by Manhattan based executive chef, David Wise. Together, they will be serving traditional barbecue fare. As far as menu items go, Lauren explained options will include Texas smoked brisket, smoked chicken, pulled pork, and sausage. Both Lauren and David have also agreed to serve vegetable heavy options as well, calling it their “green-market experience.” The menu will also include fun sides like chorizo nachos, seasoned french fries, sweet corn, baked pretzels, and even mac and cheese topped with hot Cheetos seasoning.
In terms of vegetable options, Pineapple Express offers a charred zucchini and corn salad, a cherry tomato and peach salad, and roasted cabbage.
The space at Pineapple Express Barbecue will resemble that of a traditional beer garden complete with long picnic tables, a full bar, waitstaff, and a takeout window. There will be 100 taps of beer available for guests to enjoy. Renovations included painting the walls, removing carpets, and re-equipping the kitchen. If you’ve been in the area recently you may have noticed a portion of the restaurant has already been open. Just in time for Oktoberfest, Pineapple Express Barbecue has decided to open the indoor portion of their restaurant to allow bar access, TVs to watch games, and various menu items.
Pineapple Express has also participated in the Montclair Jazz Festival this summer by providing a space for the public to grab food, hang out, and enjoy some drinks. As the restaurant fully opens in the coming weeks, we can expect and even larger indoor and outdoor space, larger waitstaff, and additional menu items to accommodate more people.
