There’s a new sushi spot coming to the Newport neighborhood of Jersey City early next year.

According to Kura Sushi spokesperson Lauren Murakami, the location is set to open in the Spring of 2022. It will be inside the Newport Tower located at 525 Washington Boulevard, which is situated next to the Newport Light Rail and PATH station.

Kura Revolving Sushi is a Southern California based sushi chain that serves food to customers via a conveyor belt. There are currently restaurants in over a dozen states and over 450 locations throughout the world including Japan and Taiwan. As of now, there is only one other Kura Revolving Sushi Bar in NJ that's located in Fort Lee.

Known as the “pioneers of the “revolving sushi” concept, the Kura family has improved upon the idea for the past 4 decades since opening back in 1977. They've developed innovative systems that combine advanced technology, premium ingredients, and affordable prices to create a unique revolving sushi dining experience.

Patrons can expect a unique dining experience at Kura. All orders are placed on a tablet that’s located on the table. Once your order is placed you’ll notice your food appear on the conveyor belt across from where you’re seated. Your food will arrive in a metal container dubbed the “Mr. Fresh”. This keeps the food fresh and eliminates the possibility of contamination. The lid pops open easily and you’ll be able to simply take just your dish to your table.

Kura’s menu includes sushi and a diverse range of other Japanese options including salads, fried rice, dumplings, tempura, edamame, soups, and ramen. Sushi takes up the bulk of the menu however and options range from over 30 nigiri options, 18 hand roll options, and 15 different hand rolls. All sushi plates are $3.15

Plates are small at Kura but patrons are encouraged to order as many as possible. The tablet menu resembles that of a video game and keeps track of how many orders are placed. Once 15 are ordered customers are rewarded with a small arcade game style price.
