The Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants provides financial support, each month, to undocumented senior citizens. Known as CAPI, its assistance is based entirely on state funds. Those who are eligible may also qualify for other benefits.

For example, those who obtain these benefits will have the option to purchase health insurance through Medi-Cal, Cal Fresh food assistance, and IHSS. What are the key eligibility requirements?

If you want to be eligible for the CAPI program, you must meet the following requirements. First, you must be a resident of the state of California. Next, you must be 65 years of age or older, blind or disabled.

It is also essential that you do not have legal status in the United States. You also must not meet the current immigration status criteria for SSI/SSP as of 08/21/96.

Other key eligibility requirements

You should not be eligible for SSI/SSP solely because of your immigration status. This means that you must apply for SSI/SSP and provide proof of your ineligibility from the Social Security Administration.

Meanwhile, it is critical that you have income below the allowable limits of $2,000.00 USD for an individual or $3,000.00 USD for a couple. Finally, you must have income below the CAPI payment standards. If you are eligible, your CAPI payment will depend on your marital status, living arrangement, and income.

If you become a U.S. citizen while you are waiting for SSA SSI/SSP eligibility, you will be eligible for CAPI benefits. That is, if you meet the other requirements listed above.

On the other hand, if you are under age 65, you may be eligible for CAPI if you meet the disability criteria. Don't forget this: to apply for CAPI you must prove your age, identity, non-legal status in the country, SSI ineligibility, or pending SSI application status.
