Bilbo Cemetery 1840 - Lake Charles, Louisiana

As I was staying in Lake Charles, LA. I read up on this old historic cemetery. Once I got there it seemed to be forgotten. Established April 8, 1840 Bilbo Cemetery is listed on the National Historic Registry and is the final resting place of the “Father of Lake Charles,” John Jacob Ryan. Although the cemetery appears to be slowly sinking into the lake, it houses around 20 crypts that hold the remains of war veterans dating back to the early 19th-century. There are also a few statues of children located around the cemetery, giving the entire location an extra boost of creepiness. Millennium Statue of Jesus Christ is located in Bilbo Cemetery on North Lakeshore Drive. The 15 ft. bronze statue on an 8 ft. base stands 23 ft. tall over the resting places of Lake Charles’ earliest and most famous settlers. The statue was sculpted by Janie Stine LaCroix, a descendant of Jacob Ryan, Jr., the “Father of Lake Charles,” who is buried in Bilbo.
