The high school volleyball season has been in full gear for the past two weeks. Calvary started the season in the first two weeks going through local 5A opponents. The Lady Cavaliers then took to the road to Lafayette area to compete at the Southside Tournament. Calvary lost their first match to St. Thomas More but bounced back against the host team and Westlake. Loyola is still searching for that first win of the season as they headed to Baton Rouge to compete at the Woodlawn-Baton Rouge tournament. The Lady Flyers finished the second week with losses to Captain Shreve and Benton. North Caddo ended the second week with a winning record at 3-2. Many snuck a win out over 5A Pineville in the past two weeks. Calvary (Division IV District 1) Week 1 & 2: 5-1 Season: 5-1 Sets: 13-2 Season Sets: 13-2 Calvary 3, Captain Shreve 0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-10) Powerhouse Calvary started the season with a sweep of the Captain Shreve Lady Gators. Junior Kiya Casey had 9 kills, 10 digs, and 2 aces. MaCaughli Hall-Wilson set the points for the Lady Cavs with 24 assists and added 2 aces. Emily Pierce was a serving machine with 7 aces and also had 7 kills and saved the plays with 5 digs. Allie Hutchings compiled 11 assists and had an ace and dig. Alexandra Campenella took 7 kills and helped at the net with a block assist. Brooklyn Morris was the third player to collect 7 kills and added a dig. Caroline Christler scored with 3 aces and helped with 2 digs. Addison Stevenson had 2 aces and 3 digs. Calvary 3, Byrd 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-13) Calvary took on their second consecutive 5A opponent and pulled off another sweep. Kiya Casey accumulated 10 kills, 2 aces, 6 digs, and 3 assists. MaCaughli Hall-Wilson set the points for the Lady Cavaliers with 14 assists, 5 aces, and added a dig. Allie Hutchings also set the points with 11 assists and 4 digs. Emily Pierce was a beast at the net with 4 block assists and scored 8 more points with 5 kills and 3 aces. Caroline Christler kept the action rolling with 9 digs and on 2 aces and added an assist Brooklyn Morris protected the net with 3 block assists and added 6 kills. Freshman Kaylee Thomas collected 4 kills, 2 digs, and a block assist. Addison Stevenson added 2 aces and 4 digs. Shelby Simmons had 4 kills Calvary 3, Airline 0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-14) Calvary Lady Cavs made it three in a row with a win over the Airline Vikings. McCaughli Hall-Wilson had the most assists with 15, added 10 digs, served 4 aces, and picked up a kill. Allie Hutchings kept points coming by setting up 13 assists and dove for 7 digs and served up an ace. Kiya Casey collected kills, 5 digs, 2 assists, and served an ace. Haynesville Falls In Division IV Nonselect State Championship
Oak Grove claimed their eighth state title in history and for the second year in a row against a Claiborne Parish team. Oak Grove, a 2A school, outscored the Haynesville Golden Tornado in a 62-36 championship game. The game was the sixth-highest-scoring game in the LHSAA championships. Oak Grove was the only two blemishes on the Haynesville 12-2 record.

Week 3 for the local high soccer saw the Calvary Cavaliers (1-2-0) boys team start their season in the Bossier Tournament. The Cavaliers took wins over Union Parish and Minden but came up short over Northwood-SHV. Loyola still had not suffered a loss as of the end of the week and were at 7-0-2 at the end of the week. They had attempted to play in the Copa Acadiana but their game had been rained up but managed to wrangle a game against Fontainebleau. North Caddo (0-7-0) competed in two tournaments over the weekend in both the Bossier tourney and the North Desoto tourney.

One thing is for sure. Northwest Louisiana will have at least one team in the state championship in New Orleans. Three teams in Class 1A and 2A wil be competing in state semifinals. Class 4A North Desoto will also be making an attempt at a return to the state championship with a matchup against Opelousas.

The first couple of weeks of the soccer season began over Thanksgiving. The three local girls team has all kicked off. Loyola Lady Flyers are currently sitting at 1-1-1 after hosting their tournament. Calvary Lady Cavaliers have a 1-2-0 record starting and adding a big 7 goals against West Ouachita and had a rough Loyola tourney appearance. North Caddo is 1-1-0 after a big win over Southwood and a loss to Northwood.

The Arcadia Lady Hornets captured the title at the Lakeside Tournament in Sibley. The Ringgold Redskins took the boys top honors at the Lakeside Tournament.

The LHSAA State Swim Meet was held last week at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center. The Calvary Lady Cavaliers finished as the state runner-up in Division IV. Episcopal School of Acadiana claimed the state championship with 265 points. Calvary finished with 233 points.

The District I Division IV all-district list was released this week. Coach Jon Casey was named Coach of the Year in the district. Casey achieved his 100th win over the past season and took the Lady Cavaliers to the State Tournament for the third consecutive year.

And then there were six…it’s time for some local teams to take a turkey leg in tow to practice. Thanksgiving week is the celebration time for the LHSAA quarterfinals. Six local teams have celebrated advancing to the elite eight of each division. Outside of the 2A-A range of schools in Northwest Louisiana, only Ruston, Airline, and North Desoto remain.

Before that, no team from North of Alexandria had ever reached the tournament. The Lady Cavaliers received some company up north as Ruston qualified fie their first trip to the tournament that is started.

The cross country season came closer to the state championships with the regional races in Division III, IV, and V. The boys and girls races were all held at Lincoln Parish Park in Ruston last Thursday. Loyola and Cedar Creek boys along with Glenbrook Girls all claimed regional titles for their teams. Claiming individual regional titles were Franklin Roemer for Loyola (Region I-III boys), Jackson Burney of Calvary Baptist (Region I-IV boys), and Ava Brown of Negreet (Region I-V girls).
