Finally, the Shreveport United Women can feel good at home as they knocked the Women’s Division-leading Cajun Rush 1-0 at Messmer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After an attempt by Cajun Rush to take the ball to their third of the pitch in the 22nd minute. A steal found Kalli Matlock left side of the goal to pop the top right corner of the net. United took a 1-0 lead at halftime. The defense played tough in the second half to take three points away from the Women’s division leader.

“It was a big win for us as Cajun Rush had not conceded a goal all season and is in first place in the standings,” Coach Mark Matlock said.

“Goal was scored by Kalli in the 22nd minute. She made a great run forward from the left back position and received a pass from Morgan Bean (LA Tech), dribbled past the last defender and hit a rocket from 25 yds to the far post that beat the outstretched keeper.

We defended really well and limited their chances to a few corners that we were able to deal with. Clean sheet for the defense consisting of Mary Helen Burford, Bryleigh Taylor, Isabel Fultz, Kalli Matlock, and Maddie Aubrey. Emerson Roberts (ULM) in goal with 6 saves.”

The win helped keep United’s hope for a playoff spot still alive. They are currently in seventh out of the eight teams, but between second to seventh is four points. The top four in the conference go to the playoffs.

The win also sent three Shreveport players to the Team of the Week. Bryleigh Taylor from Delta State was given the honor. Kalli Matlock from Loyola and Louisiana Tech received her second player of the week honor. Goalkeeper Emerson Roberts from Louisiana-Monroe was honored.

Shreveport will have to take the battle on the road now as they have exhausted their home matches. They will start with Flowood Academy in Mississippi on Saturday, June 25.
