Daylight Hour: Join us by turning off the lights for one hour on June 18

Tyrone Wallace

ST. LOUIS, MO — The annual social media campaign organized by Building Energy Exchange, Daylight Hour, will be held on June 18 from noon at 12 to 1 P.M.

Their mission is to raise awareness about using natural daylight in offices by saving energy in an hour.

Daylight Hour was initially launched in 2014 to petition offices to turn off non-critical lights in daylit spaces from noon until 1 P.M. on the last Friday closest to the summer solstice.

This year, Daylight Hour looks a little bit different than it has in the past. All participants are free and encouraged, no matter where they are.

Daylight Hour awards are given at the end of every campaign cycle to honor some of the most inspiring participants. The followings are awards for Daylight Hour 2021:

  1. First Sign Up
  2. Best Video about Importance of Campaign
  3. Most Creative Post: in-office and at home
  4. Welcome to Daylight Hour: Best New Participant Post
  5. Co-workers: Best at-home photo with pets or kids
  6. Most participating offices in one organization

There are already 240 people who signed up in 23 states and 24 countries. You, too, can get involved by filling out a registration form at

Please note: Daylight Hour is held on the last Friday closest to the summer solstice, which falls on Juneteenth this year. Therefore, for offices closed on Friday in honor of the holiday, posts and participation in Daylight Hour on Thursday, June 17, or Monday, June 21 will also be considered for Daylight Hour awards.
