With the pandemic having shifted our normal schedules and daily activities, we have been forced to form a whole new way of life for ourselves. The uncertainty of when this will all come to an end can be negatively impactful for some and can even damage one’s mental health. Practicing self-care routines is now more critical than ever. This could include keeping ourselves busy while also making smart and healthy decisions for ourselves and the ones we love.
I have always been lucky enough to be in a position where I am able to make time for self-care, therefore I have decided to round up the ways in which I have been keeping myself busy, while also creating new and fun ways to keep happy and sane. I am a firm believer in the matter of how you feel about yourself and go about your life in general constitutes your mood and overall satisfaction.
In light of the plenty downtime, you may have or just that funk you need help itching out of, here are 10 ways you can practice self-care during COVID-19 to help yourself stay healthy physical and mentally.
Try meditation or a morning workout to kick start your day. Taking 15-25 minutes to stretch/meditate or workout in the morning has been a game-changer for me. Working in that quick sweat and feeling the aftereffects throughout the day can be extremely satisfying. A simple way to do this is to search at home workouts on YouTube and to either connect them to your television or on your laptop for easy viewing.
Begin planning a future vacation. Try looking into what the prices would be for a getaway in the next 6-12 months (or sooner if you are comfortable). Creating the perfect getaway when you have time can be extremely soothing, especially knowing that you’re going to have a blast when you go. I also find that planning getaways ahead of time gives you something to look forward to. It also pushes you to be better and to do better, therefore when you go away, you know you’ve earned it.
Drink your morning coffee outside or take a walk. Getting that fresh air in the morning can really set the mood for your day. Not only are you moving your body but you’re becoming one with nature. Exposing your body to fresh air and the sound of birds chirping in the morning can be a real mood booster. Plus, treating your body well never hurt anybody!
If you’re not able to have a socially distanced get-together, do a virtual wine tasting with your besties. I can’t stress this enough! Your family and friends are your people so this should be a no-brainer. In order to keep yourself sane, you need healthy contact with the ones you love, this means incorporating some normalcy into your life. If you’re not comfortable with seeing anyone in person, try a virtual wine tasting event with your friends or family. If you’re not a drinker, try hosting a trivia game night on Zoom—these are so much fun and FREE!
Clean and rearrange your home or re-decorate an outdated space. What every woman loves to do and what drives every husband crazy. I’m always rearranging our small home and I never seem to feel completely satisfied. Does anyone else feel this way? I like to think it’s because we don’t reside in our “forever home.” Besides, clean your house, rearrange those messy closets and update that darn living room! Recently I’ve taken on the project of re-furnishing our entire living room (Chris doesn’t get it but that’s alright haha). Not only is it super satisfying but it will also make you happy which is something we all need right now. In addition to that, it is important to create the perfect space for yourself because we have all been spenidng much more time at home than usual.
Create a cute workspace for yourself. Nothing is better than having a space in your home that you're super excited to spend time in. Working from home can be tough so why not give yourself a workspace you love to be in? During the beginning of quarantine, I ordered myself a desk and chair. Over the months, I have bought small items to decorate it and the final product is absolutely stunning. I wake up and I’m excited to work because I enjoy being in the space. Create that for yourself if you're working from home.
Plan a DIY project for yourself. Lately I’ve been searching a couple of things I can do on my own rather than purchasing in order to save money. Here’s what I have come up with so far. Heading to my local dollar store, Target or home goods to find cheap vases, sanding them and then spray painting them rather than ordering the expensive matte ones from Crate & Barrel for $75. Another idea is to purchase a Canvas to create your own wall art. You can use Gesso to create textures on the Canvas to cultivate the perfect neutral and modern piece for your living room or bedroom.
Whip up a new recipe or bake some goodies for the holidays. Pinterest is always my go-to for everything food related. Create an account if you don’t already have one and search up some dinner or dessert recipes. You might even end up creating your new go-to meal. Most recently, for Thanksgiving dinner I made a Sweet Potato Casserole with melted marshmallows and it was delicious. Treat yourself if you’re on a diet!
Turn your bathroom into a spa. My favorite. Draw yourself a warm bubble-bath, add some relaxing bath salts, light a candle and relax. I also like to prop my laptop on something so I can watch Netflix—this has seriously become an everyday thing for me lately. Oh, and don’t forget the wine.
Date night with your significant other. Even if it’s not in the books for you to go out for a romantic (socially distanced dinner), create your own date night at home. A great idea could be to whip up a great 3-course meal, purchase the ingredients to make a cocktail that you’ve never made before and simply, enjoy one another’s company. End the night off with a game night or a cozy movie-night in.
