Galapagos Bucket List! Sea Turtles, Sharks, Penguins, Sea Lions, and more!

#1 highlight of our entire Galapagos trip with kids: swimming with sea lions! 

During our 7 night cruise with Eoventura, we encountered these playful animals while snorkeling multiple times.  In addition to sea lions, we swam around with TONS of sea turtles and marine iguanas! (More on these animals in our next reel!) 

The sea lions were a blast! You could dive down, twist around, do flips under water and they would copy you! They were so curious and would come right up to your face before darting the other way.  They would also playfully nip and bat at each other! 

➡️ What would be your highlight? Swimming with hammerheads, sea lions, penguins, marina iguanas, or sea turtles?  The good news is that when you go to the Galapagos, you don't have to choose.  You can do it all!

Kids Swimming with Sea Lions: Galapagos Bucket List! | Family Travel 

8 years old and free diving with hammerhead sharks!  Even dad totally flinches at the very end when it darts back towards us, did you catch it?! 😂🤣

☑️ Major bucket list item 

On our very first day in the Galapagos on a cruise with Ecoventura, our family braved the deep waters, waves, and jellyfish to snorkel and free dive with hammerheads.  It was SUCH an epic experience and we have memories to last a lifetime!

Our kids were the first of the group to dive in and immediately an 8 foot hammerhead swam right by us! They mainly stay closer to the ocean floor so we saw several more from a distance but those first few seconds were definitely the highlight! We saw some amazing schools of fish and the marine life was beautiful all around!

Kids Free Diving with Hammerhead Sharks!!! Galapagos Family Adventures | Travel with Kids

We had a perfect first day in Rome with Tiffany with Liv Tours during a private golf cart tour!!! After a week of hiking 5-10 miles a day in Cinque Terre, the kids were VERY excited to be carted around and shown the sites.  Tiffany taught us so much and was so sweet with our family.  The kids loved taking turns sitting up front chatting with her and riding backwards in the very back!! 

We went to an overlook of the city, and she timed it perfectly to watch the daily cannons go off.  In 3 hours, we saw all the main sites of Rome and also a few that were off the beaten path!  Instead of reading a textbook or even a plaque in front of a monument, the kids just got to relax and listen to Tiffany explain history in a way that was interesting and easy for them to understand! 

This was the PERFECT way to start a week-long family trip to Rome!  We first got to get an informative overview of the city and see what we wanted to focus on revisiting during the coming week.

Exploring Rome with Kids - A Perfect Way to Introduce the City During Family Travel

4 months into our trip around the world and made it to our 15th country: Kenya!  Is this what you envisioned?!

Kenya actually has the #1 ranked beach in Africa, and we are staying here on Diani Beach for a whole month!

We had our first big adventure here with Natural World Kenya during a day visit to Wasini Island, and it was some of the best snorkeling we've ever done!! The water was crystal clear, and the fish were pretty spectacular. One of the species we saw was over 2 feet long! 

The kids have been snorkeling quite a few times but this was the most comfortable they've ever seemed in the water.  They dove down to get closer looks and often ventured off on their own.  Such a special day for our family! 

We saw dolphins jumping into the air during our ride on a traditional dhow boat and had an AMAZING lunch on the island overlooking the water.

We are thankful that learning can be done from anywhere! Bookwork, reading, and writing can be completed on a train, in an Airbnb, or at a park. Maybe more importantly, learning can be on a guided tour, exchanging foreign currency, communicating with a language barrier, or during a discussion at the dinner table. 

Our goal for this year has been to do basic schoolwork but still leave as much time as possible for learning through world experiences. After all, it would be a shame to spend 6 hours on bookwork one day while the Colosseum is down the road! 

✅ So here are our basic schooling components:
- Math Workbooks
- Journals
- Reading Kindles
- Typing through writing emails to friends and family
- Language practice through Duolingo and YouTube videos
- Learning about the country, sites, science, and history of the country

What about schooling during a family trip around the world?!?

The Colombian Amazon is a hidden gem that has so much to offer!  

Cuddling with wild monkeys and sloths, swimming in the Amazon River, spotting pink river dolphins, and searching for anacondas were just a few of our family's highlights.  You can also walk across the border for dinner in Brazil and get a drink across the river in Peru all in an afternoon!

Leticia, Colombia, the "gateway to the Colombian Amazon", is accessed by a few flights per day out of Bogota.  As there is no way to get here by land, the area still seems relatively untouched.  The main square offers a few tour companies, a beautiful park, and views of the Amazon River... that's about it and it's glorious!  We would recommend 3-4 days here.  We did it in 2.5 and wish we had had one extra day of exploring.

The Colombian Amazon with Kids?! Monkeys, Sloths, and Swimming in the Amazon River!

Hope you enjoy our incredible adventures in Peru including Skylodge Adventure Suites and hiking the 4-day Inca Trail with Local Trekkers!  We climbed Via Ferrata, spent the night on a cliff 400 meters in the air, zip-lined down, hiked four days with amazing scenery, and reached our destination of Machu Picchu just to name a few!   This Peru itinerary absolutely blew our minds this past week!!!

An Adventure Around the World with 2 Kids and 4 Backpacks!

Check out our family travel vlog to Wilstem Ranch, an amazing hidden gem in French Lick, Indiana!  We spent the day here interacting with exotic animals like elephants, giraffes, and grizzly bears, as well as having some serious fun and adventure off-roading on ATVs! Wilstem Ranch is the type of destination that we travel to other countries in search of and here it is right in the middle of Indiana!  The staff there has found a way to offer these unique and special encounters while still being completely committed to the safety and well-being of the animals, their love for each of them is so obvious!  

The owners of Wilstem Ranch also own an amazing water park resort down the road, Big Splash Adventure Resort.  We absolutely loved having water slides down the hall from our hotel room and are already begging to go back!

We love when we find companies that enable younger kids to safely participate in adventure and Tuur Adventure does this with every single activity they offer. We swam through caves, jumped off banks, repelled down cliffs, and went rock climbing on the Via Ferrata route in Rhonda!

Check out our travel vlog to see the perfect way to experience Panama City Beach, Florida as a family, especially when visiting for their annual Ironman competition!  We enjoyed their CRYSTAL clear waters, explored sandbars right in front of our condo, and played around at the amazing Splash Resort booked through Southern Vacation Rentals!!!  We are so proud of dad for competing in Panama City Ironman... that's a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a full 26-mile marathon!!!!  The little ones also participated in their IronKIDS race and were so proud of their medals just like dad's! Comment below if you have a favorite activity when traveling to Panama City!
