The Boston Regional Medical Center was once a former mental hospital in Stoneham. It was founded in 1899 and was originally known as the New England Sanitarium and also the New England Memorial Hospital.

At its peak, the hospital contained nearly 200 beds for patients. This was just one of many options for those who were sick in the pre-antibiotic years.

It was during the early 20th century that the hospital saw the highest number of patients. The long-term ill were sent here to recover in isolation from major population areas–especially from TB (tuberculosis).

Unfortunately, like many mental hospitals of the past, conditions began to deteriorate fast. Sadly, many lives were lost within the hospital. What was intended to be a place of hope and care, was instead shrouded in darkness and despair.

The facility closed permanently in 1999. The building has sat vacant ever since.

Today, the interior of the hospital is considered hazardous due to high levels of asbestos, however, that doesn’t stop some urban explorers from checking it out anyway.
