Reasons People are Leaving Illinois for Other States, in Their Own Words: "I'm Being Pushed Out"

Travel Maven

The state of Illinois offers a unique blend of natural beauty, culture, and friendly communities, making it one of the greatest places to call home.

And while new residents continue to move in, the Prairie State is experiencing a significant trend of people moving out.

Here are some of the reasons that residents of Illinois have given for moving to other states, in their own words.

Cost of Living

A factor that can majorly influence migration patterns is the cost of living. Illinois has a relatively lower cost of living compared to some other states. However, rising expenses in areas such as housing, healthcare, and taxes can make it difficult for individuals and families to maintain a comfortable lifestyle.

To quote a user on Reddit:

"Taxes, property taxes. Gas is so high too. Food. It all costs more here. But, I do love it. Just don’t think I can afford it."

Another user wrote:

"It’s largely flat, rural, and the taxes are high, among other things. Personally, I’m being pushed out, and am looking for places in Wisconsin."

Political Environment

Particular policy decisions and the political environment can be a major consideration for some residents contemplating a move.

One user on Reddit writes:

"Politics mostly - if you’re a conservative in Illinois you don’t get much representation in the state legislature or in presidential elections."

Another user agrees:

"There's a large move from conservatives to get out of illinois and into battleground states because they know they're going to struggle to get the EC points to get another president into the office, as they know they cannot win the popular vote."

From taking the train to work or going to the grocery store to driving over bridges, infrastructure is the backbone of our daily lives and communities. Illinois received a C- rating from the ASCE in 2021 for its infrastructure which is not great.

And the people of Reddit definitely agree:

"Take a drive on 290. The exit ramp to I-90 is DISGUSTING and the entire road has been since long before I was even alive. It's beyond dangerous."
