The winner for the state of California is the stunning Black Sands Beach in Sausalito.

Known as one of the most beautiful black-sand beaches on the U.S. mainland, the sand here is actually black and, according to online reviews, some locals do consider this beach clothing optional–but fear not this beach is still a great option for those looking for a less crowded beach experience.

The beach is located within the Golden Gate Recreation Area woods in San Francisco, which makes for a beautiful juxtaposition against the bright blue waters and lush greenery.

The beach isn't ideal for swimming but it is great for bird watching, hiking, and magnificent views.

The steep trail of steps here leads to the top of a cliff where you can overlook the glistening Bonita Cove. To get to it, you’ll need to enter through the north side of Golden Gate Bridge and pay $10 to get in—a small fee that is totally worth it for these views that will make you fall in love with California all over again.
