Ken and Ken Gauci (father and son) signed the papers to buy Irish Hills Golf Course in Onsted, Michigan on Valentine’s Day, 2021 and renamed it Gauci Golf Resort. It was an auspicious date to begin a business meant to become a year-round destination point for friends and loved ones to gather.
Ken Gauci, Jr. told me, “The first thing we wanted to do was get the golf course back to what a golf course should be.” Ken played golf in high school and college and saw the potential in the course that hadn’t been maintained properly for years.
Gauci Golf Resort is currently open for business and the course is in great shape, with elevated tee boxes, carts, and stunning views.
“This was the first course in the whole country to offer night golf. Back in the late 1930s, Henry Ford’s second-shifters would drive out here after work to play golf and maybe have a few beers. We actually have a picture from around 1938. We look forward to being able to offer it again,” Ken told me.
The Gauci’s took on a big project. They gutted the clubhouse, pro shop and kitchen and put in new pizza ovens, flooring, and walls. Ken hopes to open the restaurant and bar by the end of summer. “Sure, it has been challenging, but we want to do it right and that takes time. We are in it for the long haul,” Ken said.
The space upstairs is completely remodeled making Gauci Golf Resort the perfect choice for wedding receptions, baby showers, and business events. “The views are spectacular. We want to use that space for special events,” Ken said. “I am picturing comedy club night and bands.” He also said it could be used for school dance parties, homecomings, and proms."
Downstairs is the pro shop and soon-to-be restaurant and bar. “We are going to have corn hole, foosball, darts and more. I am working on getting a golf simulator here.”
Gauci Golf resort will not be only a place to go during warm weather. They have a sledding hill and will offer coffee drinks for the parents and hot chocolate for the kids. “I would like to put in a magic carpet to make it easier for children to get back up to the top of the hill. We’d like to put in two snow tubing courses. For sure, there is going to be an ice rink this winter for families to enjoy," Ken said.
The Gauci family lives on Silver Lake in the Irish Hills and Onsted. They are committed to providing a place for family fun throughout the four seasons. As members of our community, they look forward to people who have fond memories of the property creating new ones with their children and grandchildren.
The Onsted property has a rich history, and I am excited to see more memories will be made in this special spot! If you remember great times at what is now called Gauci Golf Resort like I do (fabulous teen dance parties in the 1980s) please share them in the comments.
