If you haven’t checked out one of the newest shops in Brooklyn, Michigan, now is the perfect time! Sweet Caroline’s Clothing Boutique makes Mother’s Day gift giving easy with a great selection of apparel and accessories sure to delight the special mom in your life. From casual basics to fun and flirty blouses and dresses — Sweet Caroline’s has you covered!
The owner, Sara Bieda, shows horses and teaches high school algebra and calculus, so how does a clothing store fit in the equation? “Prior to opening a storefront, we had a mobile boutique. We would set up at different events in the area. A lot of times, people would want to know where they could find us. They really liked our stuff and wanted to bring their friends back or shop more often. At the time, if we weren’t set up at an event, the clothing was packed away in the trailer in my driveway! We knew we wanted to open a store, it was just a matter of finding the place to actually do it.” Sara explained.
Lucky for us, she chose Brooklyn!
Sara grew up in Grass Lake and always loved the Brooklyn area. The building she purchased has a lot of history. It used to be a barber shop, a dog groomer, and judging from the huge bar Sara found in the basement, a speakeasy. The building needed a lot of work, but Sara was careful to preserve its character. “We just love how it turned out!” Sara said.
When I asked her why she named the boutique Sweet Caroline’s when her name is Sara, she laughed. “My mom says I never named any of my horses after her, so I had to name my shop after her!” Her mother, Carol Cox, works at Sweet Caroline’s as well!
Opening a new shop during a pandemic was a gutsy move, but Sara takes everything in stride. “We have been overwhelmed with the kindness and support we have seen from this community!” she said.
Looking to the future, Sara has a lot of fun ideas to make shopping at Sweet Caroline’s a memorable experience, like a Sip & Shop, private group shopping, and after-hours events. For now, she stays mindful of Covid and limits the number of people in the store at one time.
The next time you’re in Brooklyn, stop in and say hi to Sara and her friendly staff. You will be impressed with the service, selection, and reasonable prices. This boutique is a gem and a great addition to Brooklyn’s downtown shopping district.
