This local hidden gem serves generous portions and never skimps on the fortune cookies or soy sauce
For decades, when my family wanted to eat Chinese food from an authentic local Chinese restaurant, we went to Young China in East Providence. As a child, I would accompany my mother and my grandmother to the tiny Chinese restaurant on Warren Avenue and pick songs from the jukebox while waiting for my food, which I always selected from the children's menu. The children's menu had American food options such as burgers and fries.
However, as I grew older, I discovered the joys of Chinese food and began ordering from the good part of the menu. My favorite dish was the sweet and sour chicken. To date, this is the only Chinese restaurant where I've ever been served pickles as part of a sweet and sour dish, and I loved it.
The restaurant eventually changed owners but kept the same delicious food minus the pickles.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic was too much for this tiny restaurant to bear, and they closed down forever, prompting my mother and me to find a new hidden gem located in neighboring Seekonk, Massachusetts, mere minutes away from the restaurant we frequented when I was a child.
Tai Pan Restaurant in Seekonk, Massachusetts has delicious food and ample parking behind the standalone building. Although traffic on Route 6 can be heavy at times, it is always easy to turn into the spacious parking lot and find a spot to park.
The main entrance of the restaurant is at the rear of the building off of the parking lot and features a wheelchair ramp so the building is accessible to all.
Since the restaurant has temporarily paused indoor dining and does not have an outdoor dining area, there are only two options at present: takeout or delivery.
I always opt to order and pay online and then pick it up myself.
The food is carefully packed into a cardboard box that a staff member wearing a mask, and often a face shield, passed through a hole in the plastic that sits in front of the cash register since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Occasionally, the box is too large to fit through the hole. So they slide it across a table located strategically beside the cash register near the entrance and exit to the restaurant.
This is what a box of vegetable chow mein with crispy noodles, meatless fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, and a double order of egg rolls looks like when I pick it up.
