Can Relationship Status Be Hidden on Facebook?

The bigger question is this: Why would you want to hide your relationship status on Facebook ?

I was recently thinking about whether or not it is possible to hide your relationship status on Facebook. Then I thought a little further and wondered a couple more things: Should you hide your relationship status on Facebook? And what does hiding your relationship status entail? What’s the point of it?

Relationship status can be an important part of your identity. It gives you a sense of who you are — or help others figure out who you are — and inform those around you about what is happening in your life. But sometimes you might want to hide it for some reason, such as to keep something secret from other people on Facebook, or because you’re really annoyed at your partner right now and would rather avoid them. Let’s take a look at the reasons why people would want their relationship status on Facebook hidden, how they can make it so on Facebook, and why that might not be a good thing for them.

You might be wondering whether you can hide your relationship status on Facebook if you are in an open relationship.

Did your partner decide to end the relationship? Is your boyfriend or girlfriend two-timing you with someone else? Are you married and have a secret girlfriend or boyfriend on the side? Whatever the case may be, there are times when you wish that you could hide your relationship status on Facebook.

I’ve had plenty of friends ask me if they could hide their relationship status on Facebook. Many are worried about guys or girls stalking them, or breaking up with their partner and losing a bunch of friends. I can definitely see the logic in that, but it’s not the real reason you want to hide your relationship status on Facebook. And the real reason has nothing to do with some misguided belief that your life will be happier if nobody knows you’re in a relationship. The actual reason is much more interesting than that.

You want to hide your relationship status on Facebook because you don’t want to share that information with your Facebook friends. Many people are concerned about safety issues but it’s really about privacy and control. One good argument for hiding your relationship status, unless of course you’re in a public relationship where everyone knows, is that it makes it difficult for an outsider to know if you have a partner or not.

The following information comes directly from Facebook. It is located in the Facebook help center.

How do I hide my relationship status on Facebook?

Sharing your relationship status on Facebook is optional. You choose who can see your relationship status on your profile by using the audience selector.

To adjust who can see your relationship status:

Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.

Click About, then click Family and Relationships.

In the Relationship section, click the privacy settings next to your relationship.

Set your privacy settings to Only me.

Your partner may want to share that they’re in a relationship with you on their profile. Each person controls who can see their relationship status on their profile. If you confirm that you’re in a relationship with your partner when they update their relationship status, the relationship may appear on their profile, depending on their audience settings.

If you haven’t added a relationship status to your profile, you can still see your privacy settings by selecting Add your relationship status and choosing your desired privacy setting.
