I started my childcare career in 2005 When I open my first childcare facility Kisha’s Learning Academy. I had one child for 3 months with no income coming in. Through the assistance of my mother and my husband I was able to keep Kisha’s Learning Academy open. As new children started to enroll, I was able to hire one staff member, but I did not take a salary in order to pay my one staff member. I outgrew the location in 2 years. I could only have 12 kids in my home, so I had to turn parents away due to not having the space to accept more children. I relocated in 2007 to a building and I expanded twice from 2007-2018 Kisha’s learning Academy closed in August 2018 because I knew it was time to really step outside the box and spread my wings. Kisha’s Learning Academy was a for-profit business that funded Journeys of the Heart because I knew starting off, I wouldn’t get any grants or donations in the beginning. I started Journeys of the heart on January 3, 2017, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with just a vision to do after school only to help parents who could not afford daycare. For 25.00 a week. We provided transportation and a hot meal after school. The first day our School Bus Broke down I knew God had something special for JOTH. We were also open year-round so when the kids were out of school for winter break spring break and summer. We provided care for that same rate. (Serving 200 kids a day). I made Journeys an all-day childcare center in December 2018 outgrew the location and needed an overflow building. Journeys of the heart signed its lease at New Community Church in 2018 and we now serve 85 after-schoolers. Journeys of the heart are opening its 3rd location in Highland Park Dallas. Our grand opening is June 4th. Journeys of the heart have definitely been on a journey, simply because when you have a Great Staff and Support System that looks out for you just as much as you look out for them the only way is UP. We are Blessed and Thankful for this wonderful journey. We just purchased a 54-passenger charter bus and we are planning to close down the daycare for a week to go to Disney World 2023. Giving back to my community and helping my parents Is my passion and I’m walking in my purpose. -Lakisha Price, Program Director
Closing Kisha’s Learning Academy August 2018 was definitely a struggle. Trying to pay off bills and not having the income to do so was so hard. I cried day and night. My faith is so strong I knew God had me, but I had to dig deep within myself. Mentally, Physically and Emotionally. People was needing my help while I was going through my storm. I was helping them and couldn’t even help myself. 3 months turned into 6 months turned into a year. January 2019 I could finally breathe. No one knew I was struggling because I’m always smiling. I’m thankful for the storm because it made me so much stronger. -Lakisha Price, Program Director
I’m Proud of this Journey. When I look back at where I started and where I am today it makes my heart smile. What makes Journeys of the heart different? We are hands-on with our children and their parents making them feel at home and treating them like their family because that’s what we are a big family helping one another. -Lakisha Price, Program Director
I grew up in Tyler, Texas having a childcare facility where you grew up as a child makes it so much more special. The dislike is not having land to expand my organization. -Lakisha Price, Program Director
