The Fleming Island Golden Eagles football team got a 28-7 victory Monday night over the Middleburg Broncos in a spring game.
The spring game atmosphere was very similar to the regular season game day atmosphere outside of the absence of the bands from both teams.
Fleming Island started out hot on offense for their first two drives. Both ended in scores courtesy of a 37-yard touchdown run from running back Tyler Beverly and a 45-yard Devaen Boykin receiving touchdown from a pass from quarterback Cibastian Broughton.
Fleming scored their third touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a 55-yard run from Beverly. Fleming’s final score of the game was a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carson Stewart to Trace Burney. Fleming also had three turnovers in their win over the Broncos. Kaylib Singleton had an interception in the first quarter, a fumble recovery from Joey Couch and an interception from Sebastian Cruz in the second quarter.
Middleburg’s lone score came in the bottom half of the third quarter. The Broncos maintained a steady drive that ended with an eight-yard touchdown run from running back Lawson Padgett.
Neither team scored points in the fourth quarter because the game ended with 10:55 left due to lighting in the area.
Fleming Island’s matchup against the Middleburg Broncos was the debut game of first-year head coach Chad Parker. Parker replaced Damenyum Springs in late December of 2022 after Springs stepped down after six years as head coach of the program. Parker was with the storied Bartram Trail football program for nine years and won a State Championship in 2017. Parker also learned from legendary northeast Florida high school football coach Darrell Sutherland.
Parker’s Golden Eagles will be one of the most talented teams in Clay County. Fleming Island returns with the most experienced quarterback in Clay County in Broughton. Broughton has been the starter for his freshman and sophomore seasons and has 2630 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns with 1,010 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in his young career. Some other notable returning names based on 2022 stats include defensive back Kaylib Singleton, linebacker Demhir Jackson, safety David Smith and wide receiver Trace Burney.
