The St. Johns Country Day Spartans baseball team will advance to the FHSAA 2A State Championship Saturday morning after they got an 8-3 win over the Westminster Academy Lions Thursday evening in the FHSAA 2A State Semi-Final.
St. Johns had a multitude of contributors on offense that resulted in RBIs for the Spartans. Those players include George Gilson (2), Sean Alford (3), Kellen Brown, Mason Terry, and Isaiah Mamea. Alford was the highlight of the team on offense. Alford went 3-3 with three RBIs and a triple.
St. Johns deployed three senior pitchers that kept the Lions’ offense at bay. Jacob Thomas, Jeff Henry and Mason Terry combined for seven innings pitched, three strikeouts, one walk, seven hits, three runs and one earned run given up.
With the Spartans' victory over the Lions, St. Johns will face the Lakeland Christian Vikings for the 2A FHSAA Baseball Championship at 11 a.m. St. Johns will be the home team as they are the one-seed and the Vikings are the two seed. Lakeland Christian has a season record of 24-5 with a 16-1 record at home, a 2-4 record on the road and a 6-0 record for neutral site games. The Vikings are currently the 18th-best team in Florida, the second-best team in 2A and the sixth-best team in the Tampa Bay area.
The Spartans have been one of the best baseball teams in 2023 across the state of Florida. They currently sit with a 26-4 record with an 11-1 record at home, an 11-1 record on the road and a 4-2 record at neutral site games. The Spartans are ranked 16th in the state of Florida, the second-best team in Jacksonville and the number-one team in 2A prior to the playoffs, according to MaxPreps.
