The St. Johns Country Day Spartans baseball team will advance to the FHSAA 2A Baseball State Semi-Final after the Spartans won the FHSAA Region 1 Championship 10-5 Monday night at home over North Florida Christian.
The Spartans got revenge over North Florida Christian for last year's Region 1 Championship, where North Florida upset St. Johns at home, 4-1.
The Spartans' offense showed up Monday night, with 13 hits, nine RBIs, four doubles and one home run. The Spartans who had RBIs were Hunter Rodgers, Kellen Brown (3), Jacob Thomas (3), Kody Daneault (2) and Isaiah Mamea (3), with those three RBIs coming off a three-run home run beyond the center field wall.
St. Johns deployed three pitchers in Daneault, Jeff Henry and Trevor Bradley. The trio finished with seven innings pitched, four strikeouts, three walks, six hits and five runs given up.
The Spartans have been one of the best baseball teams in the state of Florida for the 2023 season. They currently sit with a 25-4 record with an 11-1 record at home, 11-1 record on the road and a 3-2 record at neutral site games. The Spartans are ranked 16th in the state of Florida, the second-best team in Jacksonville and the number-one team in 2A, according to MaxPreps.
MaxPreps has not released who St. Johns will play but the Spartans will play on Friday at 10 a.m. or noon at Hammond Stadium at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, according to the FHSAA website. If St. Johns wins the semi-final, the Spartans will play Sunday at 11 a.m. for the 2A FHSAA Baseball State Championship.
