The Ridgeview Panthers baseball team got an 8-1 win against Clay High Thursday night for the FHSAA 5A District 3 Championship in a neutral site game at Orange Park High School.

The matchup between the county and district rivals looked to be a high-scoring affair after both teams scored one run a piece in the first inning. Ridgeview scored in the top of the inning after a few throwing errors put a Ridgeview base runner at home and Clay responded with a Chase Haggard sacrifice fly to score Cole Carnell. However, Clay failed to score the rest of the night following the run in the first inning.

The game stayed low scoring until Ridgeview scored four runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth. Ridgeview players that had RBIs in the game were Tommy Glasspoole, Douglas Langley, Billy Girgis, Cody Holland (2) and Clayton Gulbrand (2).

Girgis started on the mound for the Panthers and went the distance. Girgis finished the game with seven innings pitched with five strikeouts, one walk, four hits and one earned run. Ridgeview’s defense played a significant factor in the game with clutch catches in the outfield and a perfect fielding percentage across the board.

Clay on the other hand struggled on the defensive side of the ball with four errors during the game.

This game was a revenge game for the Panthers because Clay beat them at their home 10-5 earlier in the season. This is the first time Ridgeview has won a district championship since Ridgeview beat Clay in 2016 for the FHSAA 6A District 4 Championship at Clay High, 8-3.
