The St. Johns Country Day baseball team got a shutout 4-0 win on the road against the Clay High Blue Devils Thursday night.

St. Johns jumped out to an early lead in the baseball game. In the top of the first inning, starting pitcher Jacob Thomas got two RBIs on a fielder's choice to give St. Johns a 2-0 lead. St. Johns added the last two runs of the game in the fourth inning. Isaiah Mamea got two RBIs on a double to put the Spartans up, 4-0.

The game was highlighted by dominant pitching for both teams, keeping two explosive offenses to a low score. Thomas started on the mound and shut the Clay High offense down. Thomas pitched in 3.2 innings, striking out three hitters while only giving up one hit to earn his first win on the mound of the 2023 season, according to MaxPreps. Relief pitchers Jeffery Henry and Trevor Bradley came in the game and had dominant performances themselves. Henry pitched in 2.1 innings with three strikeouts and only two hits given up. Bradley pitched in one inning, struck out two batters and gave up only one hit.

Eli Roberts started on the mound for Clay High and pitched in 3.1 innings, striking out two batters with five hits and four runs given up. Relief pitcher Merrick Rapoza came into the game and pitched in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts, three hits and no runs given up.

With the win over a top team in the area, St. Johns is heating up throughout the back half of the season. The Spartans are on a six-game win streak since their loss to Oakleaf two weeks ago, getting wins against great teams in Bartram Trail, Providence, Fleming Island and Clay High. The Spartans currently have a 14-3 record and look to be hitting the expectations of baseball fans in Clay County.

Despite the loss, the 14-4 Blue Devils are still one of the dominant teams in Clay County despite being one of the most inexperienced teams heading into the 2023 season. Clay High will have to put this loss behind them quickly as they are set to face the 15-2 Creekside Knights on the road Tuesday night.
