Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently made waves when he officially tossed his hat into the ring for the 2024 presidential race. But he didn't stop there. DeSantis, known for his bold moves, declared his love for something else, too: cryptocurrency.
Speaking alongside tech bigshot Elon Musk and venture capitalist David Sacks, DeSantis didn't hold back. He said the current folks in power in Washington aren't too friendly toward Bitcoin. He even suggested that if they kept up their act, they might just kill off Bitcoin for good.
But what's DeSantis' plan? Does he want to turn the Sunshine State into the Crypto State? It seems he might be trying. As Florida governor, DeSantis put his signature on a law that blocks central bank digital currencies (or CBDCs) from being used in Florida. That's a pretty big move, considering the lack of general education regarding the crypto space.
In his chat with Musk and Sacks, DeSantis explained that he doesn't feel the need to control everything that's happening in the world of crypto. To him, Bitcoin is a threat to the people in power, and they're trying to regulate it right out of existence.
But here's the question on everyone's minds: is this move a genuine concern for civil liberties, or is it just a political play? DeSantis is no stranger to controversy, and his stance on crypto has stirred the pot.
This isn't just about Florida, either. DeSantis has promised that if he gets to sit in the Oval Office, he'll stay clear of CBDCs. His reason? He's worried they could be misused to mess with purchases that some folks might not like.
Some argue that CBDCs actually protect our rights when it comes to buying and selling stuff. They say it could help out people or businesses that have been cut off from using private companies to make transactions.
But DeSantis isn't having any of it. For him, CBDCs are just another issue that's splitting up the country. Only time will tell whether DeSantis' gamble on crypto will pay off or if his dreams of a Bitcoin-filled future will go up in smoke.
What do you think about DeSantis' support for crypto?
