As a permitless carry bill passes in the House, Florida is one step closer to allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons without a license.

The legislation, supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis and prominent Republican leaders, would eliminate the need for concealed carry permits and the associated background checks and training.

Critics have labeled the bill "untrained carry," fearing it will make the state less safe.

The Sunshine State already has a problem with gun violence, and permitless carry laws may only flood the streets with more dangerous firearms.

Meanwhile, gun manufacturers may only celebrate for all the profits they stand to make in Florida.

Gun owners must apply for a license to carry a concealed firearm in Florida, but the new bill would only require a valid ID while possessing the weapon. You also won't need a license to hide the gun either.

The legislation would not affect the firearm purchasing requirements, and those currently prohibited will remain.

While criminals face scrutiny when buying firearms, they can avoid being asked to present a valid license for carrying a gun. Florida also barred credit card companies from tracking gun sales earlier this year, presenting bad actors with even more opportunities to avoid being caught.

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration, with Gov. DeSantis indicating he would sign it if passed.

Reactions to the bill have been divided, with gun safety activists and families of gun violence victims opposing it. At the same time, some local law enforcement officials argue that it won't change the behavior of criminals. If passed, Florida would become the 26th state to eliminate concealed weapons permits, joining states like Texas, Georgia, and Alabama.
