Donald Trump allies filed an ethics complaint against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis because they believe he is using his position as governor of Florida to launch a "shadow presidential campaign."
Make America Great Again Inc., a political action committee that backs Trump, filed the 15-page complaint on Wednesday asking the Florida Commission on Ethics to investigate DeSantis' activity like his travel to primary states, a book deal, and meetings with potential donors and campaign staff.
To be fair to Trump's team, everyone and anyone seem to think DeSantis is planning to run for president. Republicans seem to want DeSantis to win over Trump in 2024.
DeSantis is rapidly becoming the future of the GOP and a conservative voice of America.
Trump team seems scared of DeSantis
The complaint said DeSantis is "leveraging his elected office and breaching his associated duties in a coordinated effort to develop his national profile, enrich himself and his political allies, and influence the national electorate."
The complaint demands the nine-member commission, five of whom were appointed by DeSantis, to suspend the governor from office.
According to Trump's allies, Florida's Republican leader "violates state and federal campaign finance laws."
DeSantis Communications Director Taryn Fenske denied the accusations and probed the motives of the Trump allies, "adding this to the list of frivolous and politically motivated attacks. It's inappropriate to use state ethics complaints for partisan purposes."
Trump's team has been ramping up attacks on DeSantis ever since Trump announced his bid. These attacks legitimize DeSantis as a fierce opponent and prop up the idea of DeSantis becoming president.
Before he announced his candidacy, Trump was likewise criticized and accused of violating federal campaign laws by raising and spending funds ahead of the 2024 campaign launch.
While DeSantis has yet to announce his 2024 presidential bid formally, he has already earned a classic moniker reserved for Trump's enemies. In this case, it's Ron DeSanctimonious.
The Florida governor is widely expected to announce his 2024 campaign after Florida's legislative session terminates in May. It's still unclear whether DeSantis will run. He's still facing some legislative roadblocks to doing so, but the Florida leaders seem to stand by his side and appear to be willing to move laws around to enable him to run for president.
