DeSantis is keeping his 2024 plans quiet, while Trump loses no time to coming after DeSantis.
Former President Donald Trump intensified the tension between him and Ron DeSantis when he shared a video of the Florida governor on his Truth Social page.
DeSantis was caught in the footage saying he wants to be like former House Speaker Paul Ryan, a staunch critic of Trump.
To which the former president responded, "Wow!"
Only one winner
"I would be somebody who would be different, I think you see that I've been recognized nationally as being somebody who would be different, who would be a leader, who could be somebody like a Paul Ryan very quickly," DeSantis said in the video.
After Trump criticized his response to the pandemic, DeSantis pointed out that he won reelection while Trump did not.
"The good thing is, is that the people are able to render a judgment on that whether they reelect you or not. And I'm happy to say, you know, in my case, not only did we win reelection, we won with the highest percentage of the vote that any Republican governor candidate has had in the history of the state of Florida ... That verdict has been rendered by the people of the state of Florida," DeSantis said.
Trump said he supported DeSantis in 2018 and helped him win the governor's office. From 2013 through 2018, DeSantis previously held office in the US House.
"So then when I hear he might run, I consider that very disloyal. But it's not about loyalty, but to me, it is, it's always about loyalty, but for a lot of people it's not about loyalty," Trump said.
Ryan, who presided as House Speaker from 2015 to 2019, claimed last month that Trump is "fading fast."
