Fisher Island: Who Lives in One of Florida's Most Exclusive Communities?

Just south of South Beach lies one of Florida's most exclusive and wealthiest island communities.

Fisher island is some sort of a fairy-tale paradise. No reported crimes. A best-rated day school. And a tight community of 700 families, including celebrities and influential social elite.

Unlike the Billionaire's Bunker (Indian Creek) with its lavish mansions, Fisher island has more emphasis on community. The island is almost entirely made of residential buildings and only a few mansions.

You can't just walk into Fisher Island and mind your business. Visitors can access the island only by ferry, boat, or helicopter, followings a strict invitation-only policy. The same goes for residents. No roads lead to Fisher Island.

Today, buying a property on Fisher island would set you back at least $5.7M, according to Realtor.

The hi-story and Fisher's famous residents

The island was built in 1911, but true sunrise started when Carl Fisher bought the island from Dana Dorsey. Fisher then decided to develop the island into a luxury playground for the elite. Hence, its name today is Fisher Island.

Carl G. Fisher traded the island with Willian K. Vanderbilt in exchange for a luxury yacht named Eagle. Since then, the island changed hands until it was fully developed.
