The 23 Things You Must Do In Austin, TX Before You Die

Toni Koraza

Austin is the capital of Texas, and it’s often called “The Live Music Capital of the World.” It’s also one of those places where you can be as weird, proud, or square as you want to be. The city has a welcoming attitude towards individuality that makes Austin feel like home for so many people.

From the nightlife to the food scene to shopping and outdoor recreation- Austin is an incredible city.

Austin is full of places to see and things to do before calling it quits

  1. Ride a horse on the River Ride or join the BBQ Ride.
  2. Go to a Texas Longhorns game at the University of Texas.
  3. Take an aerial tour of Austin from above with ATX Heli Tours or Austin Helicopter Tours.
  4. Visit Barton Springs Pool during peak hours and go for a swim (or just enjoy your picnic).
  5. Enjoy the sunset at the top of Mount Bonnell to cap off a great day of hiking.
  6. Ride The Circuit of The Americas Formula One racetrack. You don’t even need a driver’s license to ride the Formula One racetrack. Just hop on your bicycle and pedal around this amazing track.
  7. Get your picture taken with Willie Nelson’s statue on 2nd Street near his and go for one of Willie Nelson’s Barbecues and Sauces.
  8. Attend SXSW Interactive or SXSW Music, Film, and Convergence Festivals and see what all the fuss is about.
  9. Drink beer at any one of these breweries: Live Oak Brewing Company, Hops & Grain Brewery, Independence Brewing Company, Jester King Brewery.
  10. Walk around Zilker Park in Spring. Spring is the time when the grounds at the park come alive. It’s a beautiful place to stroll around and see all of the flowers in bloom and capture the magic of Austin’s nature.
  11. Catch a show at ACL Moody Theater. Many of the shows at ACL Moody Theater notoriously get sold out, so be prepared to get there early or book in advance.
  12. Watch fireworks over Lady Bird Lake. If you haven’t seen fireworks over Lady Bird Lake, you’re missing out! I recommend going on New Year’s Eve or the Fourth of July.
  13. Spend an evening shopping in Barton Creek Square Mall.
  14. Have dinner and a couple of cocktails at vibrant Sixth Street bars.
  15. Visit the world’s largest urban bat colony under Congress Avenue Bridge, and see up to 1 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge nightly for their evening feeding frenzy.
  16. Eat Taco breakfast at Tacodeli, Torchy Tacos, or any of the top 7 Taco Places in Austin, TX.
  17. Enjoy live music at Austin City Limits Festival. The festival is a marvelous place to hear some of the best live music around. Just be careful because the festival can get a bit too fun, and it’s easy to get carried away.
  18. Watch a UT Longhorn football game from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium’s Tower Club overlooking the field.
  19. Tour The University of Texas campus (including the Blanton Museum)
  20. Kayak down the Lady Bird Lake Town Lake.
  21. Take Your Date to Oasis at Lake Travis or any other 10 Austin’s Top Date Places.
  22. Spend the night shooting golf balls at Topgolf.
  23. Visit the Texas State Capitol. It’s one of the most historic buildings in America.

Austin, TX is a city unlike any other

The city is home to some of the best barbecues in America and has an overabundance of live music venues to choose from. But there’s more than just booze and BBQ to this Lone Star State capital city. You’ll find great shopping, plenty of world-class museums, and even a few things that you might not expect.
