Billboards in Texas Encourage Migrants To Go To Sanctuary Cities

Tom Handy

Over the past two years, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has bused over 70,000 migrants to sanctuary cities. This includes Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, and Los Angeles. Now an unknown entity is posting billboards in Texas encouraging migrants to go to two of these cities.

In El Paso close to the downtown area, two billboards are erected encouraging migrants that other cities are safe for them. The billboard encourages migrants to go to San Francisco and New York City.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the billboards say:

“San Francisco Welcomes Immigrants” and “New York City Welcomes Immigrants.” Then the billboards are linked to

The group Sanctuary Cities has not responded to questions about the billboards.

Co-President of the San Francisco LatinX Democratic Club Kevin Ortiz said according to KTSM:

“So, these billboards, we’re seeing it as a form of misinformation. It’s really just disingenuous in nature because on one hand, it’s really encouraging migrants to come to San Francisco, but it’s not actually having any resources to connect folks to that.”

On the website Sanctuary Cities, it states:

“A Sanctuary City is a safe haven for immigrants like you, regardless of your immigration status. These cities have policies in place to limit their cooperation with the national government's effort to enforce immigration laws. This means you can live, work, and enjoy life with a lower risk of deportation.”
