The largest city in America saw its mayor switch political parties which is causing an uproar. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson was reelected for another term as a Democrat in May. Then last month, Mayor Johnson came out and said he was switching parties and was a Republican.

Mayor Johnson was first elected to office in 2019 as the 60th Dallas mayor as a Democrat. Then he was reelected several months ago and now he has switched political parties.

This has only caused an uproar among his constituents in Dallas. Dallas County Democratic Chair Kardel Coleman was not surprised since it has been hinted that Johnson leaned Republican.

Coleman said on Inside Texas Politics according to ABC 8:

“Not necessarily surprised, but definitely disappointed.”

The Democratic Party has started a petition calling for Mayor Johnson to Resign.

“That entire process is hinging on the residents of Dallas and also the voters to be able to power that through.”

The petition needs 97,000 signatures for Mayor Johnson to resign.

Republican Congressman advises Johnson

Mayor Johnson does have an ally in Congress. Republican Representative Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey is familiar with switching parties since he did the same four years ago.

Drew said according to Fox News:

"I appreciate what he did, and, as the mayor of Dallas, he came to the same conclusion that I did. He just didn't fit into the party anymore."
"This is not your mother's and father's or grandmother's or grandfather's Democratic Party. This is an extremely left-wing socialist party that wants to completely change our republic and completely destroy the American experience. So, I am happy that I changed."
"You have to believe in this great republic. And those are the kinds of elected officials and senators and congresspeople that we need."
