Gotaways are illegal migrants who cross the southern border and avoid legally applying to enter the country. Despite the security along the border, some migrants find a way to get across the border.
In May, The New York Post wrote there were over 1.5 million gotaways who entered the country.
Despite these figures, an Arizona Republican believes U.S. Customs and Border Protection is undercounting the number of gotaways.
Representative Andy Biggs said in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that the number of gotaways could be higher than what was reported.
According to Fox News, Border Patrol said there are 675,000 gotaways this year.
In the letter, Biggs wrote:
"However, when agents report groups of aliens that exceed 20, no matter the number above, the group is reported as ‘20+’ and counted as 20.”
"For years, sources have claimed this maximum category of 20+ has led to underreporting. Now, given the sheer volume of people entering the United States illegally, gotaway groups regularly exceed that number, leading to further underreporting."
Biggs wrote in the letter that he said sheriffs, agents, and local officials believe there were more gotaways than reported.
It is quite possible that there are more gotaways than the numbers reported by the Department of Homeland Security.
Fox News reported there are over 1 million gotaways under the Biden administration.
Do you think there are more gotaways than what is reported?
