As the number of migrants crossing the border grew this summer, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs is calling on President Joe Biden for support. Governor Hobbs has had conversations with the president before, but now she is asking for a lot more support.
This summer, Arizona became the number one state for migrant crossings overtaking Texas. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol had to lock up migrants in outdoor cages in over 100 F weather as mentioned in The Intercept.
The Mexican cartel was encouraging migrants to use open gates for easy access into Arizona according to The New York Post. The gates were open to prevent flooding during monsoon season, but they served as easy access for migrants to cross into the United States.
According to a press release, Governor Hobbs stated:
“My administration has worked tirelessly to support border communities, stem the flow of drugs and human trafficking, and keep our neighborhoods safe.”
“But as it stands today, Arizona is being overwhelmed. I’m calling on Congress and the Biden administration to come together immediately to deliver much needed border security to the State of Arizona. Federal officials need to put politics aside and pass real solutions that will give our state the resources it needs to manage the increase in migrants at the border.”
Pima County thanked the governor, but the request is long overdue.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors Chair Adelita Grijalva said:
“But our resources are at capacity, so Pima County needs immediate action from the federal government to provide us with the means required for the critical service we are providing. We have kept asylum seekers and our community healthy and safe for more than four years and now we need more resources to continue our work on this federal issue.”
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is working on building a new facility to house migrants. In another border city, El Paso, Texas, the border patrol built a migrant facility earlier this year according to The New York Post.
Do you think Governor Hobbs waited too long to request more support from President Biden?
