Two years ago, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was the first governor to send troops to support the southern states of Arizona and Texas. Now Governor Noem answers the call of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and plans to send military support once again.

On June 1, Governor Noem said she will send at least 50 National Guard soldiers to support Abbott and Operation Lone Star. As of May 23, Operation Lone Star has apprehended 377,000 illegal immigrants, made 28,000 criminal arrests, and seized over 417 million lethal doses of fentanyl.

South Dakota may not have a problem with illegal immigrants but the drug problem is real. About 50% of drug overdoses were related to drugs containing fentanyl.

On June 1, Governor Noem said:

“The border crisis is growing worse under President Biden’s willful inaction. Across the country, crime rates, drug overdoses, and human trafficking have all skyrocketed because our border remains a warzone.”
“Our National Guard soldiers are the best prepared to tackle this challenge. They have proven that they can serve with excellence in a situation such as this, and I am confident that they will do so again.”

Governor Noem joins other Republican governors who are sending military personnel support and equipment to the Texas southern border. Noem is also considered a possible candidate to be a running mate for presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Last month, Governor Abbott sent a request to all governors asking for their support. Abbott feels the Biden administration was not doing enough as the migrant crisis reached an all-time high last year as a record number crossed the border. Last year there were over 2.7 million encounters by Customs and Border Patrol and Federal law enforcement.

It wasn’t until January this year that President Joe Biden started to implement immigration policies. The policies have slowed the number of illegal crossings but there arrival of migrants continues along the border.

Do you think Governor Noem made the right decision?
