Since the beginning of the year, many expected Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would announce he is running for president of the United States in the 2024 election. After months of traveling to key states including Las Vegas, New Hampshire, and Texas, DeSantis has not mentioned he was running for president.
The governor has promoted his book, The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival. This is usually a sign a presidential candidate is running for office.
President Joe Biden wrote Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose before he ran for office.
Former President Barrack Obama wrote The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream and Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance before he was elected to office.
Former President Donald Trump has written several books but he wrote one before he ran for office. Trump wrote Great Again: How to Fix Our Crippled America.
So, Governor DeSantis has been rumored for about a year that he would throw his name in that he was running for president but he hasn’t mentioned that. Florida reporter Mahsa Saeidi said DeSantis is using funds as governor as he travels to other states promoting his book.
She said as long as DeSantis doesn’t say he is running for president, he is allowed to do that. But once he says he is running for office, then he must use his own funds and not the funds he accumulated as Florida governor.
Campaign finance expert Jonathan Brill has worked on campaigns for 25 years said:
“Up until he becomes a presidential candidate. He’s traveling the country as the governor of Florida.”
“As the governor of Florida he can use…a state political committee to fund that travel.”
Once DeSantis declares his candidacy for president, he will have to use his own funds raised instead of the pool of money as Florida governor.
This is a smart little trick Governor DeSantis is using before he officially announces he is running for president.
