The number of migrants that have crossed the border in 2022 is over 2 million people. This is up 25 percent from a year ago.
States bussed or flew many of the migrants to sanctuary cities in the United States.
As mayors and governors are facing a crisis, a member of Congress shares her thoughts.
On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made a comment trying to solve the migrant crisis:
"We have a responsibility to secure our border, we also have a responsibility to recognize the importance of newcomers to our nation."
"Right now, the best thing we can do for our economy is to have comprehensive immigration reform.”
Referring to Governor Ron DeSantis's chartered flight from Tampa to fly Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Pelosi said:
"You see, in Florida, some of the farmers and growers say, 'Why are you shipping these immigrants up north? We need them to pick the crops down here.'"
Pelosi’s comment brought a lot of backlash from the Republican party.
The RNC Latinos tweeted:
"Nancy Pelosi thinks immigrants should be picking crops. When Democrats show you their true colors, believe them."
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) tweeted about Pelosi’s comment:
"Nancy Pelosi said the quiet part out loud: Democrats want illegal immigrants to come in and take American jobs.”
What the current law states on immigration
The last time a bill was passed on immigration reform was in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. The Immigration Reform Act of 1986 made it illegal for an employer to hire people who were unauthorized to work in the United States.
The act granted 2.7 million people legal status in the United States.
