President Joe Biden wants federal workers to get a pay raise. Federal employees who earn minimum wage will see an increase in their pay. Biden wants federal workers to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour. San Antonio is the Texas city with the most federal workers.

Most of the employees work at military bases in San Antonio including Fort Sam Houston Army Base, Joint Base Camp Bullis, Lackland Air Force Base, Camp Stanley Storage Activity Army Base, Martindale Airfield Army Base, Medical Education, and Training Campus Fort Sam Houston.

In Texas overall there are about 6,800 federal employees who could benefit. The policy is expected to go into effect on January 30, 2022.

Federal employees include the Defense Department, Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

According to KXAN, last year President Biden said raising the minimum wage “enhances worker productivity and generates higher-quality work by boosting workers’ health, morale, and effort; reducing absenteeism and turnover, and lowering supervisory and training costs.”

The national minimum wage is $7.25.

Fox business news stated across the United States, there are 2.2 million federal workers. A majority of these workers earn minimum wage.

Kiran Ahuja, the director of the Office of Personnel Management said in a statement:

“Raising pay rates across the federal government to a minimum of $15 per hour reflects our appreciation for the federal workforce and our values as a nation."

The Office of Personnel Management issued a memo to all department heads and agencies to adjust the pay for employees who earn minimum wage.

President Biden also required federal contractors to receive a raise, but this does not go into effect until 2024. The minimum wage for federal contractors is $10.95 an hour. The Hill expects this to affect all federal workers across the United States. President Biden signed the bill in April 2021.

Democrats and organized labor have worked to increase the minimum wage for all Americans but the effort is not gaining full support in Congress.

The Texas Tribune stated, "economists and independent analysts are certain that hiking the minimum wage would have an impact on low-wage workers, especially those who have been considered essential during the pandemic."
