Former Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris was picked by incoming President Joe Biden as his running mate in the 2020 presidential elections. So what credentials does Kamala Harris bring to the White House?

Who is Kamala Harris?

Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California with parents of Jamaican and Indian descent. She was the first woman and African American to serve as San Francisco District Attorney and California Attorney General. She was also the second black woman to serve in Senate in 2017 replacing former Senator Barbara Boxer and she is the first South Asian American elected to the Senate.

While district attorney, Harris pushed through progressive reforms in California, and in San Francisco, she instituted a program for education for first-time drug offenders and work opportunities instead of jail time. Harris defended the state’s death penalty and sought to punish parents whose children were traditionally late for school.

While in the Senate, Harris has vocally criticized President Trump’s policies. She has criticized Supreme Court Brett Kavanaugh, Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and CIA Director Gina Haspel.

Her voting record has matched many of the progressive members of her caucus including former 2020 presidential contenders Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand. While campaigning for president, Harris stopped short of endorsing Medicare for All and proposed more policy reforms. Kamala Harris was a senior advisor for Hillary Clinton in her 2016 run for office.

While campaigning for the Democratic Presidential ticket in 2019, Harris was seen as a frontrunner but ran out of money in her campaign. On August 11, 2020, Harris became the third female nominee for Vice President after Geraldine Ferraro and Sarah Palin.

Harris’ family

Kamala’s parents were her late mother Shyamala Gopalan who was a breast cancer scientist who emigrated from Tamil Nadu, India in 1960. Her father was Donald Harris and is a professor of economics at Stanford University. He emigrated from British Jamaica in 1961. The Vice Presidential nominee has a younger sister, Maya Harris.

Where did Harris go to school?

Kamala grew up in California and began kindergarten in Berkley’s second year of biracial desegregation busing program. Two years before, the bus was 95% white.

Harris later attended school in Montreal, Canada when her father accepted a job offer. Kalama graduated in 1981 from Westmont High School located in Westmont, Quebec. She then went to Howard University in Washington, DC for college.

While at Howard, Kamala was politically involved in student government and protested apartheid with fellow students at the South African Embassy. She also interned as a mailroom clerk for California Senator Alan Cranston. While at Howard, Harris also chaired the economic society, led the debate team, and joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

After Howard, Kamala attended the University of California, Hastings College of Law and earned her Juris Doctor before passing the California State Bar in June 1990. She then began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Harris was eventually recruited to work at the San Franciso District Attorney’s Office and then the City Attorney of San Francisco. She was then elected the Attorney General of California in 2010 and then re-elected in 2014.

Is the time right for Harris?

While serving as the district attorney, Harris sought to improve the criminal system. As Democrats are doing the same with the recent black lives movement and police actions, Harris understands the system very well. Some of her ideas may become important and improve the criminal system.

In a recent interview, Kamala Harris said:

The reason I made a very conscious decision to become a prosecutor is because I am the child of people who, like those today, were marching and shouting on the streets for justice. When I made the decision to become a prosecutor, it was a very conscious decision. And the decision I made was, I’m going to try and go inside the system, where I don’t have to ask permission to change what needs to be changed.

Harris quickly found her way into politics working alongside former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown. His support may have helped her career in politics as she moved from the district attorney office to the United States Senate.

As Presidential nominee Joe Biden ran for office in November against President Donald Trump, do you think Biden made the right choice selecting Kamala Harris?
