On May 17, Florida's most outspoken and occasionally-divisive Republican - Matt Gaetz - appeared on Newsmax to debate the latest round of controversial and apparently 'woke' beer adverts.

The debate occurred after Miller Lite released a new advert featuring decades-old adverts featuring bikini-clad women, being shredded and spread as compost.

Commenting on the adverts as part of the Newsmax panel, Gaetz was outspoken and unequivocal as he slammed the brewery for failing to learn from the recent impacts for Anheuser Busch who featured transgender Dylan Mulvaney as their brand ambassador.

Commenting on the advert, the Florida Congressman Gaetz, expressed his opinion, drawing comparisons between women models from decades-past, and the musical artist Lizzo:

"Good looking women in bikinis, sell beer. Nobody wants to buy beer from Lizzo."

His inflammatory comments are sure to draw backlash, but perhaps it's the case that Gaetz actually wanted to gain some attention and ignite discussion?

Diabetics should "just lose weight" says Gaetz

In recent weeks there have been signs of a more conciliatory and mellow Matt Gaetz, after news emerged that the Florida Republican would be co-sponsoring a bill with his ideological opponent - New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The pair were jointly to tackle corruption amongst fellow-politicians who exploited insider information to make personal fortunes.

Followers of Gaetz, particularly Floridians who voted for him may be surprised by his actions, given that he has repeatedly proven-himself to be more inclined to stir up controversy, often voting against bills that have a clear humanitarian purpose and a benefit for Americans. He has also on occasion made statements that were so offensive as to appear intended to garner attention for himself.

In 2022, Gaetz was one of 193 House Republicans who in April voted against capping the cost of insulin at $35 per month. Perhaps more surprising than his vote, was the statement that the Florida Congressman made as a suggestion to those suffering from the disease: an assertion that type 2 diabetics should instead lose weight and exercise more!

The vote passed with 193 in favor.

More fat-shaming from Gaetz

Later in 2022, Gaetz went even further in attacking those who are over weight. Speaking on the supreme court having recently overturned Roe Vs. Wade - effectively denying women of their rights to choose to abort a pregnancy - Gaetz spoke at a conservative conference about whether women who protest against the ruling should even be concerned about getting pregnant.

In extremely hateful comments that trivialized an important issue, Gaetz said:

"Why is it that the women with the least likelihood of getting pregnant are the ones most worried about having abortions? Nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb."

His comments backfired however, as a political activist turned his comments into a way to make a large sum of money for a cause providing access to family planning services.

His recent remarks on beer adverts seem destined to attract even more controversy - and a public retaliation from Lizzo are likely to be forthcoming!

Do you think that Matt Gaetz should be more cautious about how he speaks in public on such matters, or do you think this is part of his strategy to gain attention? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
