Was the name chosen to win points with DeSantis?
It was reported on May 25 that a small public park in Manatee County, FL will be named after the state's Governor Ron DeSantis.
The park's name was chosen by county commissioners on May 24 in a 6 to 1 vote in favor of the name. Other names that were put to the public vote included 'Parky McParkface', 'South Park of Manatee' and 'The Barking Lot'!
Honoring the governor's leadership?
One of those who supported the chosen name - County Commissioner James Satcher stated that the governor had been honored in this way, in recognition of his firm stance in regard to pandemic restrictions and in response to threatened mask mandates.
The park will incorporate various facilities for those in the area including a dedicated dog park, pickleball courts, a fitness trail and preserved wetlands.
Trying to win favor with the governor?
The choice of name wasn't entirely free from controversy.
Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh has been accused of using the naming to try and win favor with Governor DeSantis. Baugh is currently the subject of an ethics probe after allegations of channeling vaccines in the county during 2021.
It would be within the governor's power to remove her from office which might seem less likely if she were supportive of having named the park after him?
While certain local politicians may be keen to appeal to the governor, the public vote heavily favored naming it after Ron DeSantis - almost 100 people voted for it, far more than any other suggestion!
Construction begins later this year with the park opening in 2023.
